How to Buy Slippers as a Gift

Nearly everyone already has slippers, but a new pair is always welcome. From drugstore varieties to fleece-lined leather to the familiarfuzzy slippers, you should find a lot of options.

1.Find out the approximate shoe size of the recipient. You don't always need to be exact; some slippers come in approximate sizes such as small, medium and large.

2.Consider when the person wears slippers. If they're worn only in the house or when relaxing, soft soles may be fine. If the person always ends up going outside with slippers on, consider a PVC or other durable sole.

3.Think about how warm theslippers need to be. Simple terry cloth or velour slippers might be fine for warm climates or for wearing around the house, but lined or Polartec slippers will be warmer in a cold climate.

4.Choose a color. These days, slippers come in a variety of colors and styles.

5.Shop at drugstores, department stores or Web sites.

6.Be sure the slippers can be exchanged or returned before you buy.

7.Buy a robe to match if you can afford it, or add a cozy throw.

Tips & Warnings

Try to be at least somewhat practical. Even though Aunt Sue loves pigs, wandering around in a huge pair of pig slippers might not be her cup of tea.

When buying slippers for older folks, be sure they have nonslip surfaces on the bottom. This will help prevent accidents at home.
